Juta's Primary Law team do their bit for Mandela Day...

The Juta Law Reports and Statutes Department spent time in honour of International Mandela Day hard at work renovating the Environmental Education Centre in the False Bay Ecology Park (FBEP).

The usually desk-bound Juta team commemorated Mandela Day by assisting staff of the City of Cape Town’s Biodiversity Management Branch with renovating the Environmental Education Centre in the False Bay Ecology Park (FBEP).

False Bay Ecology Park is one of over 30 natural areas managed by the City of Cape Town. The Environmental Education Centre located within the Zeekoevlei was once an attractive, functional venue hosting environmental education programmes. The facility was forced to close in January 2011 after it was vandalised. The Juta team, along with a number of other volunteer institutions participated in the renovation and cleanup.

The City of Cape Town staff and Environmental Educational Trust coordinated the volunteers in cleaning the venue while the City’s Building and Maintenance Department fitted new doors, windows and an alarm system.

The team which included Primary Law Manager, Joanita Theron, spent the day painting, plugging holes in the walls, cleaning spider webs and scrubbing toilets. The team enjoyed the camaraderie of their shared effort and commented on how much fun it was to spend a day out of the office using a different set of skills to their normal routine heads down working away at Law Reports and Statutes.

The centre will be fully functional again by September 2011 when the first environmental education group arrives.
