The competition, named in honour of the late Chief Justice of South Africa and former head of the SA Law Commission, aims to encourage legal writing and scholarship in any area of law reform in South Africa.

The winning essays, unanimously selected by a panel of eminent legal academics and judges, are titled:

1. The shape of things to come? Ubuntu as a framework for the imposition of punishment in South Africa by Jonathan Parsonage

2. VAT and E-Commerce: Still Looking for Answers? by Theo Steyn

The prize, sponsored by Juta Law, is awarded annually for the best essay in the area of law reform by an LLB or LLM student at a South African university. The joint winners each received Incredible Connection vouchers to the value of R10 000 at a cocktail function held at the Constitutional Court in Johannesburg on 16 April 2010. The winners’ supervisors and law faculties will all receive book tokens to the value of R750.
